Storyセザンヌが1888〜90年ごろに描いた肖像画です。赤いチョッキに青いネクタイ、つばのある帽子をかぶった若者が、片手を腰に当てて立っています。うしろには大きな布がたれ、青や緑の影が画面をいろどります。今はアメリカ・ワシントンのナショナル・ギャラリー・オブ・アートにあります。
Cézanne painted this portrait around 1888–1890. A young man in a red waistcoat, a blue tie and a brimmed hat stands with one hand on his hip. Large drapes hang behind him, and blue and green shadows color the picture. It is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
モデルは、パリでモデルの仕事をしていたイタリア出身の少年ミケランジェロ・デ・ローザとされます。セザンヌは同じ少年を、ポーズを変えて油絵で4回も描きました。ゆっくり時間をかけ、色の面を少しずつ積み重ねるように形を作るのがセザンヌのやり方。この立ち姿の1枚は、シリーズの中でいちばん大きく、完成度の高い作品とされています。
The model is thought to be Michelangelo de Rosa, a young Italian who worked as a model in Paris. Cézanne painted him four times in oil, in different poses. Cézanne worked slowly, building forms little by little with patches of color. This standing version is said to be the largest and most fully worked of the series.
絵は1895年、画商ヴォラールが開いたセザンヌ初の個展に並びました。翌1896年、ヴォラールはこの絵をイタリアのコレクター、ファッブリに売ります。のちにドイツの銀行家ゴールドシュミットの持ち物となり、1958年にロンドンのオークションで、当時の絵の最高値22万ポンドで落札されました。手に入れたポール・メロン夫妻が、1995年に美術館へ贈りました。
The painting appeared in Cézanne's first solo exhibition, held by the dealer Ambroise Vollard in 1895. In 1896, Vollard sold it to the Italian collector Egisto Fabbri. It later belonged to the German banker Jakob Goldschmidt. In 1958 it sold at auction in London for £220,000, then the highest price ever paid for a painting at auction. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon bought it and gave it to the museum in 1995.

Secretsセザンヌは同じイタリア人の少年を、ポーズを変えて4回油絵にしました。今はスイスのビュールレ財団と、アメリカの3つの美術館に分かれています。ビュールレ財団の1枚は2008年に盗まれ、2012年にセルビアで見つかるという大事件も起きました。
Cézanne painted the same Italian boy four times in oil, each in a different pose. The paintings are now in the Bührle Foundation in Switzerland and three museums in the United States. The Bührle version was stolen in 2008 and found in Serbia in 2012.
1958年、ロンドンのサザビーズで、名画7点だけを売る夜のオークションが開かれました。会場にはタキシード姿の客や俳優カーク・ダグラスらが集まり、競りは21分ほどで終了。この絵は22万ポンドで落札され、当時オークションで売られた絵の最高値になりました。
In 1958, Sotheby's in London held an evening auction of just seven great paintings. Guests in black tie, including the actor Kirk Douglas, filled the room, and the sale was over in about 21 minutes. This painting sold for £220,000, the highest price ever paid for a painting at auction at that time.
セザンヌは長いあいだ認められず、初めての個展が開かれたのは1895年、56歳のときでした。画商ヴォラールの店でのその展覧会に、この絵も並びました。翌1896年にこの絵を買ったのが、イタリアのコレクター、エジスト・ファッブリです。彼はセザンヌの作品を何十点も集めた熱心なファンでした。
Cézanne was not recognized for a long time. His first solo exhibition was held in 1895, when he was 56, at Ambroise Vollard's gallery, and this painting was included. The next year, the Italian collector Egisto Fabbri bought it. Fabbri was a passionate fan who collected dozens of Cézanne's works.
この絵は1920年、イタリアの国際美術展ヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレにも出品されました。そのときの題名はイタリア語で『赤いチョッキ』。イタリア人のモデルを描いた絵が、イタリア人の持ち主によって、イタリアの観客に紹介されたのです。
In 1920 the painting was shown at the Venice Biennale, the international art exhibition in Italy. Its title there was the Italian for 'The Red Waistcoat'. A picture of an Italian model, owned by an Italian collector, was shown to Italian visitors.
