Van Gogh painted this in February 1890, at the hospital in Saint-Rémy. Branches of an almond tree with white flowers fill the picture against a bright blue sky. We seem to look up at them, and we cannot see the ground or the trunk. Almond trees are among the first to bloom in the south of France, so they are a sign of new life.
The painting was a gift for the baby son of his brother Theo. The baby was born on 31 January 1890 and was named Vincent Willem, just like his uncle. Van Gogh painted it to hang in the baby's bedroom. The clear outlines and flat colours clearly show the influence of Japanese prints.
In a letter, Van Gogh said it was perhaps the most patient and calm work he had ever done. But soon after he finished it, he became very ill. When his nephew Vincent Willem grew up, he transferred the family's collection to a new foundation, with support from the Dutch state. This led to the Van Gogh Museum, which opened in 1973.

Theo named his son Vincent Willem, after his brother. In a letter to his mother, Van Gogh said he would have preferred the baby to be named after their father. Still, he was very happy and painted this gift.
The nephew became an engineer. Later, with support from the Dutch state, he transferred the family's Van Gogh works to a new foundation so they would stay together. The state built the Van Gogh Museum for them. Today this painting is one of the most popular works there.
Looking up at branches and cutting them off against the sky is common in Japanese flower-and-bird prints. Van Gogh learned this bold way of framing from the prints he collected in Paris.
Van Gogh meant it for the baby's bedroom, but Theo and his wife Jo are said to have hung it above the piano in their living room, where the whole family could see it every day. Spring flowers were always blooming where the family gathered.
