These are almond flowers. They bloom early in spring. Van Gogh painted them for a new baby. The baby was the son of his brother Theo. When the boy grew up, he helped to start the Van Gogh Museum!
Van Gogh painted this in February 1890, at the hospital in Saint-Rémy. Branches of an almond tree with white flowers fill the picture against a bright blue sky. We seem to look up at them, and we cannot see the ground or the trunk. Almond trees are among the first to bloom in the south of France, so they are a sign of new life.
