In a square at night, a café terrace glows yellow under a gas lamp, and stars sparkle in the sky. People walk along the cobblestone street. Vincent van Gogh painted this in September 1888 in the Place du Forum in Arles, in the south of France. It is now in the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands.
Van Gogh set up his easel in the square at night and painted this on the spot. He wrote to his sister that it was a night painting without black, with only beautiful blue, violet and green. The yellow terrace and the blue sky are opposite colors, and together they make the light feel even brighter.
This painting later joined the collection of the Dutch collector Helene Kröller-Müller. She collected Van Gogh's works with great passion, and many of them are shown at the Kröller-Müller Museum, in a forest park in the Netherlands. It is one of the best places to see Van Gogh, after the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

The building of the café still stands in the Place du Forum in Arles. Its yellow front was painted later to look like the picture, and it has been known as 'Café Van Gogh.' Standing there feels like stepping into the painting.
One researcher suggested that Leonardo da Vinci's 'The Last Supper' is hidden in this painting. He pointed out about 12 customers around a waiter in white, and a cross-like shape behind him. But this is only one theory.
This is said to be the first painting in which Van Gogh used a starry sky as a background. Next came 'Starry Night Over the Rhône,' and the following year, 'The Starry Night.' This was the first step toward the world's most famous starry sky.
Van Gogh wrote to his sister that the opening of Guy de Maupassant's novel 'Bel-Ami,' with its starry night and brightly lit cafés in Paris, was roughly the same subject he had just painted. It is a link that shows how much he loved books.
