Story深い青の夜空に星がまたたき、向こう岸の町のガス灯が、ローヌ川の水面に黄色い光の帯を落としています。手前の岸辺には、寄りそって歩く男女。描いたのはフィンセント・ファン・ゴッホ。1888年9月、南フランスのアルルで描かれ、今はパリのオルセー美術館にあります。
Stars twinkle in a deep blue sky, and the gas lamps of the town across the river cast yellow streaks of light on the River Rhône. On the near bank, a couple walks close together. Vincent van Gogh painted this in Arles, in the south of France, in September 1888. It is now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
ゴッホは夜の色を描くことに夢中になっていました。この絵は、夜にガス灯の明かりの下で描いたと手紙に書いています。弟テオへの手紙では、空は水色がかった緑、水は濃い青、ガス灯の反射は赤みがかった金色、北斗七星は緑とピンクにきらめく、と色をくわしく説明しています。
Van Gogh was fascinated by the colors of the night. He wrote that he painted this at night, under a gas lamp. In a letter to his brother Theo, he described the colors in detail: an aquamarine sky, deep blue water, reddish-gold reflections from the gas lamps, and the Big Dipper sparkling green and pink.
翌1889年、この絵はパリのアンデパンダン展に出品されました。ゴッホが生きているあいだに展覧会で紹介された、数少ない作品のひとつです。同じ年、ゴッホはサン＝レミの療養院で、あのうねる夜空の『星月夜』を描くことになります。静かな川辺の星空と、うねる夜空。2枚をくらべると、ゴッホの変化がよくわかります。
In 1889, this painting was shown at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris. It was one of the few works by Van Gogh shown in an exhibition during his lifetime. That same year, at the hospital in Saint-Rémy, he painted his swirling 'The Starry Night.' Compare the calm riverside sky with the swirling one, and you can see how his art changed.

Secrets空の上のほうに、大きな七つの星がひしゃくの形にならんでいます。これが北斗七星。ゴッホは手紙でも、北斗七星をふくむ「大熊座」が緑とピンクにきらめいていると書いています。ただし、絵の中の北斗七星の位置は、実際の見え方とはちがうと指摘されています。
In the upper part of the sky, seven large stars form the shape of a ladle. This is the Big Dipper. In his letter, Van Gogh wrote that the Great Bear, which includes the Big Dipper, sparkled green and pink. However, experts point out that its position in the painting is not astronomically exact.
ゴッホは夜に外で描くため、帽子のつばにろうそくを立てていた、という有名な話があります。ただし、はっきりした証拠はなく、言い伝えと考えられています。この絵については、ガス灯の下で描いたと本人が手紙に書いています。
There is a famous story that Van Gogh put candles on the brim of his hat so he could paint outside at night. But there is no clear proof, and it is thought to be a legend. For this painting, he himself wrote that he worked under a gas lamp.
ゴッホは手紙で、夜は昼よりもずっと色が豊かに思える、という意味のことを書いています。さまざまな青や緑、黄色で夜を描いたこの絵は、その考えをそのまま形にしたものです。
Van Gogh wrote in a letter that the night often seemed to him even more richly colored than the day. This painting, made with many blues, greens and yellows, puts that idea into practice.
描かれた川辺は、ゴッホが借りていた「黄色い家」から歩いてすぐの場所でした。このころ彼は、黄色い家に画家仲間を集める夢を持ち、ゴーギャンの到着を心待ちにしていました。ゴーギャンが来るのは翌月のことです。
This spot on the river was just a short walk from the Yellow House, where Van Gogh lived. At that time, he dreamed of bringing artists together there, and he was eagerly waiting for Gauguin. Gauguin arrived the next month.
