It is night by a river. Many stars shine in the sky. The town's yellow lights shine on the water. Two people are walking together. Van Gogh said the night has more colors than the day!

Stars twinkle in a deep blue sky, and the gas lamps of the town across the river cast yellow streaks of light on the River Rhône. On the near bank, a couple walks close together. Vincent van Gogh painted this in Arles, in the south of France, in September 1888. It is now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

🦉 Fun Fact! In the upper part of the sky, seven large stars form the shape of a ladle. This is the Big Dipper. In his letter, Van Gogh wrote that the Great Bear, which includes the Big Dipper, sparkled green and pink. However, experts point out that its position in the painting is not astronomically exact.
