迷路暗い！でもゴッホ本人は「いちばんの作品」と言った、農民たちの夕食。So dark! Yet Van Gogh called this farmers' supper his best work.

この作品のお話
Storyランプの明かりの下、農家の5人が小さなテーブルを囲み、ジャガイモの夕食を食べています。右の女性はコーヒーをついでいます。描いたのはフィンセント・ファン・ゴッホ。1885年、オランダのニューネンで描いた最初の大作で、今はアムステルダムのファン・ゴッホ美術館にあります。
Under a lamp, five people from a farming family sit around a small table and eat potatoes for supper. The woman on the right is pouring coffee. Vincent van Gogh painted this in 1885 in Nuenen, in the Netherlands. It was his first big painting, and it is now in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
ゴッホは農民のほんとうの暮らしを描こうと、何か月も農家に通い、顔や手のデッサンをくり返しました。モデルはデ・フロート家の人々です。弟テオへの手紙には、皿のジャガイモに手をのばすその手で、土を耕してきたことを表したかった、という意味のことを書いています。色も、わざと土のように暗くしました。
Van Gogh wanted to show the real life of farmers. For months, he visited their homes and drew their faces and hands again and again. The models were the de Groot family. In a letter to his brother Theo, he wrote that he wanted to show that these people had dug the earth with the same hands they put into the dish. He chose dark, earthy colors on purpose.
完成したとき、友人の画家ラッパルトにきびしく批判されました。手紙で激しく言い争ったすえ、その年のうちに二人の友情は終わってしまいました。それでもゴッホは2年後、妹への手紙で、この絵はやはり自分のいちばんよい作品だ、と書いています。のちの明るい色の絵とは正反対ですが、ゴッホの原点といえる作品です。
When it was finished, his painter friend Anthon van Rappard criticized it harshly. After a bitter argument in letters, their friendship ended that same year. Even so, two years later, Van Gogh wrote to his sister that this was still the best thing he had done. It is the opposite of his later bright paintings, but it is where his art began.

Five people eat dinner in a dark room. They eat potatoes under a small lamp. Van Gogh painted this in 1885. The colors are very dark. But he said it was his best painting!

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets1991年4月、ファン・ゴッホ美術館から、この絵をふくむ20点の名画が盗まれました。ところが逃げる車のタイヤがパンクし、犯人たちは絵を置いて逃走。絵はわずか35分後に見つかりました。
In April 1991, thieves stole 20 major paintings, including this one, from the Van Gogh Museum. But their getaway car got a flat tire, and they ran away without the paintings. The paintings were found just 35 minutes later.
この絵の前に描かれた小さな版は、オランダのクレラー＝ミュラー美術館にあり、1988年12月に盗まれました。犯人は別の盗難作品を返して身代金を要求しましたが、翌年に警察が絵を取り戻し、身代金は払われませんでした。
An earlier, smaller version of this painting is in the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands. It was stolen in December 1988. The thieves returned another stolen painting and asked for ransom, but the police got the paintings back the next year, and no ransom was paid.
ゴッホは1887年、妹ヴィルへの手紙で、ニューネンで描いたジャガイモを食べる農民の絵は、結局いちばんよい作品だ、という意味のことを書いています。パリで明るい色を学んだあとでも、この暗い絵を一番に挙げていたのです。
In 1887, Van Gogh wrote to his sister Willemien that the painting of the peasants eating potatoes was, after all, the best thing he had done. Even after he learned to use bright colors in Paris, he still put this dark picture first.
ゴッホは油絵を仕上げる前に、同じ構図の石版画（リトグラフ）も作りました。石版石に直接描いた絵は刷ると左右が反対になるため、人物のならびが油絵と逆になっています。アムステルダム国立美術館などに、その版画が残っています。
Before he finished the oil painting, Van Gogh made a lithograph print of the same scene. He drew the image straight onto the stone, so it came out reversed when printed. That is why the people sit in the opposite order. Copies of the print are kept in places like the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
