Story黄色い麦わら帽子をかぶったゴッホが、少しななめからこちらを見つめています。1887年の夏、パリで描いた自画像で、今はニューヨークのメトロポリタン美術館にあります。顔もひげも背景も、短い色の線を並べて描かれていて、画面全体がきらきらとふるえているように見えます。
Van Gogh, wearing a yellow straw hat, looks at us from a slight angle. He painted this self-portrait in Paris in the summer of 1887. It is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. His face, his beard and the background are all made of short lines of color, so the whole picture seems to shimmer.
ゴッホは1886年からパリで弟テオと暮らし、印象派や新しい画家たちの絵にふれました。とくに、小さな色の点を並べるスーラたちの「点描」に影響を受けています。ただしゴッホの筆あとは点ではなく、勢いのある短い線。上着の青と背景のオレンジは、たがいを引き立てる「補色」の組み合わせです。
In 1886, Van Gogh moved to Paris to live with his brother Theo. There he saw works by the Impressionists and other new painters. He was especially influenced by Seurat and others who painted with small dots of color. But Van Gogh's marks are not dots. They are short, lively lines. The blue jacket and the orange background are complementary colors that make each other stronger.
この絵は、のちにアメリカの収集家アデレード・ミルトン・ド・グルートの手にわたり、1967年に遺言でメトロポリタン美術館に贈られました。じつはこのカンヴァス、裏側にも絵があります。それはゴッホがオランダ時代に描いた、まったく雰囲気のちがう暗い色の絵でした。
Later, the American collector Adelaide Milton de Groot owned this painting, and she left it to the Met in her will in 1967. In fact, there is another painting on the back of this canvas. It is a dark picture from Van Gogh's years in the Netherlands, with a completely different mood.

Secretsカンヴァスの反対側には、1885年にオランダで描いた『ジャガイモの皮をむく女』があります。名作『ジャガイモを食べる人々』と同じころの、暗い農民の絵です。たった2年で、ゴッホの色はここまで明るくなったのです。
On the other side of the canvas is 'The Potato Peeler,' painted in the Netherlands in 1885. It is a dark picture of a peasant from the same time as 'The Potato Eaters.' In just two years, Van Gogh's colors became this bright.
カンヴァスの糸の密度や織り方をくらべた調査で、この布は1885〜87年に描かれた別の7点の絵と、同じロールから切り出されたものだとわかりました。布にも「兄弟」がいたのです。
Researchers compared the thread counts and weave of the canvas. They found that it came from the same roll of cloth as seven other paintings by Van Gogh from 1885 to 1887. Even the canvas has 'brothers and sisters.'
ゴッホと弟テオは生涯に何百通もの手紙をやりとりしましたが、パリでは一緒に暮らしていたため、この時期の手紙はほとんどありません。だからパリの自画像は、そのころのゴッホを知る大切な手がかりなのです。
Van Gogh and his brother Theo wrote hundreds of letters to each other. But in Paris they lived together, so there are almost no letters from this time. That is why his Paris self-portraits are important clues about his life then.
1887年の夏、ゴッホは麦わら帽子をかぶった自画像を何枚も描きました。アムステルダムのゴッホ美術館などにも、帽子の形や色合いのちがう「麦わら帽子の自画像」があります。
In the summer of 1887, Van Gogh painted several self-portraits in a straw hat. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and other museums also have straw-hat self-portraits with different hats and colors.
