Story

It is the middle of the night in an almost empty café. There are red walls, a green ceiling and a yellow floor with a billiard table in the center. The lamps are surrounded by rings of light. The man in white is the owner, usually identified as Joseph Ginoux. Vincent van Gogh painted this in Arles in September 1888. It is now in the Yale University Art Gallery in the United States.

This café was near the train station and stayed open all night. People with nowhere to sleep, or who had drunk too much, spent the night there. Van Gogh rented a room at this café. He wrote to Theo that he tried to express the terrible passions of humanity with red and green. He called the café a place where people can ruin themselves or go mad.

Later, the great Russian collector Ivan Morozov owned this painting. It was nationalized in 1918 after the Russian Revolution, and in 1933 the Soviet government sold it abroad. The American collector Stephen Clark bought it that year. After his death, it entered the Yale University Art Gallery in 1961 as a gift in his will.
