In August 1888, in Arles in the south of France, Van Gogh painted fifteen sunflowers in a vase. The background, the table and the vase are all yellow. It showed that a painting made almost only of yellow could be very powerful. It is one of his most famous still lifes, and it now hangs in the National Gallery in London.
Van Gogh was excited because his fellow painter Paul Gauguin was coming to live with him in the 'Yellow House' in Arles. He painted several pictures of sunflowers to decorate the rooms. Some flowers are just opening, some are in full bloom, and some are dying and showing their seeds. The whole life of a flower is in one vase. The paint is very thick, so the centres of the flowers are bumpy.
Gauguin admired Van Gogh's sunflower pictures and later asked in a letter for one. In January 1889, Van Gogh painted three 'repetitions' based on his sunflower pictures from the year before. This picture passed from Theo's widow, Jo, to her son. In 1923, a London gallery bought it, and in 1924 it was bought for the nation with the Courtauld Fund. Today it is one of the most popular paintings in the museum.
This is a famous painting of sunflowers. Van Gogh painted it in 1888 in France. He wanted to make a room pretty for his friend Gauguin. Almost everything in it is yellow. Look at the vase. He wrote his name, 'Vincent', on it!
Van Gogh signed his paintings only 'Vincent'. In a letter to his brother Theo, he explained that French people could not pronounce 'Van Gogh'. Here, the name is written in blue on the vase.
Van Gogh is thought to have painted seven Sunflowers in a vase. One belonged to a businessman in Ashiya, Japan, and it burned in an air raid in 1945. In 1987, a Japanese insurance company bought a repetition of this London picture for 24.75 million pounds, a world record at the time. It is now in the SOMPO Museum of Art in Tokyo.
In October 2022, two climate activists threw tomato soup at this painting. It was protected by glass, so the painting itself was almost unharmed. The event made news around the world.
Scientists have found that 'chrome yellow', the paint Van Gogh used, can slowly turn brownish in light. The sunflowers we see today may be a little duller than when he painted them.
