In October 1888, Van Gogh painted his own bedroom on the first floor of the Yellow House in Arles. We see a yellow wooden bed, two chairs, a small table and pictures on the walls. In a letter, he wrote that the painting should rest the mind. This is the first of three versions, and it is in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
Van Gogh painted almost no shadows. Like a Japanese print, the room is made of flat areas of bright colour. The floor seems to tilt, and the back wall is slanted. In fact, the Yellow House stood on a corner, so the room really was not square. Some say the two chairs show his wish to welcome a friend.
The next year, while Van Gogh was in hospital, this painting was damaged by damp. In September 1889, he used it to paint a second version of almost the same size (now in the Art Institute of Chicago) and a smaller third one for his mother and sister (now in the Musée d'Orsay). The three are a little different, so it is fun to compare them.
This is Van Gogh's bedroom in Arles. You can see a yellow bed, two chairs and a table. He wanted the picture to feel calm. Here is a surprise. The walls were purple! The red paint faded, so now they look blue.

In a letter, Van Gogh said the walls were pale violet. But today they look blue. Scientists found that the red paint he mixed in to make purple has faded in the light, leaving only the blue.
The two portraits at the top right are thought to show his friends in Arles: the Belgian painter Eugène Boch and the soldier Paul-Eugène Milliet. In the second and third versions, these faces are different.
In 2016, the Art Institute of Chicago built a real copy of this room for an exhibition. It was offered on a home-sharing website for 10 dollars a night, and it became very popular.
The Yellow House was badly damaged by bombing in 1944, during the Second World War, and later pulled down. We can never see the real room. These three paintings keep it alive.
