この作品のお話
Story1888年、フランス北西部ブルターニュ地方のポン＝タヴァンで、ゴーギャンが描いた絵です。白いずきんをかぶった地元の女性たちが、教会で聞いた説教を思いうかべています。目を閉じて祈る女性もいます。木の幹のむこう、真っ赤な地面の上では、聖書に出てくるヤコブが天使と組みあっています。これは女性たちの心に見えた「幻」なのです。
Gauguin painted this in 1888 in Pont-Aven, in Brittany in northwest France. Local women in white caps are thinking about the sermon they heard in church. Some close their eyes and pray. Beyond a tree trunk, on bright red ground, Jacob from the Bible is wrestling with an angel. This is a vision in the women's minds.
旧約聖書には、ヤコブがひと晩じゅう天使と格闘する話があります。ゴーギャンは、現実の女性たちと幻の場面を、ななめの木の幹で分けました。赤一色の地面、太い輪郭線、平らな色。目で見たとおりではなく、心で感じたものを描く、ゴーギャンの新しい絵への大きな一歩でした。太い輪郭線で平らな色を囲むこの描き方は「クロワゾニスム」と呼ばれ、友人の画家ベルナールたちも試みていました。
In the Old Testament, Jacob wrestles with an angel all night. Gauguin separated the real women from the vision with a diagonal tree trunk. The all-red ground, thick outlines and flat colours marked Gauguin's big step toward a new kind of painting that shows feelings rather than what the eye sees. This style with strong outlines around flat colours is called Cloisonnism, and his friend Émile Bernard was trying it too.
ゴーギャンはこの絵を近くのニゾン村の教会に贈ろうとしましたが、神父にことわられてしまいました。絵はその後パリなどで展示され、1925年にスコットランド国立美術館のものになりました。今ではゴーギャンが自分のスタイルを見つけた、記念すべき一枚とされています。
Gauguin tried to give this painting to the church in the nearby village of Nizon, but the priest refused it. Later, it was shown in Paris and other places, and in 1925 it entered the Scottish National Gallery. Today it is seen as the picture in which Gauguin found his own style.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secretsゴーギャンは友人たちとこの絵を運び、近くのニゾン村の教会に贈ろうとしました。しかし神父は受け取りませんでした。宗教の場面を描いた絵なのに、教会に飾ってもらえなかったのです。
Gauguin and his friends carried this painting to the church in Nizon to give it as a gift. But the priest would not accept it. A painting of a Bible story was not wanted by the church!
天使とヤコブの組みあう姿は、葛飾北斎の『北斎漫画』の相撲取りの絵がヒントになったといわれます。木の幹で画面をななめに切る構図も、広重の「亀戸梅屋舗」の影響と考えられています。
The wrestling pose is said to come from sumo wrestlers in Hokusai's sketchbooks, the 'Hokusai Manga'. The tree trunk cutting across the picture probably came from Hiroshige's 'Plum Park in Kameido'.
右下で目をふせている、ずきんをかぶっていない人物は神父です。その横顔はゴーギャン自身に似ているといわれます。画家が自分の絵の中に入りこんでいるのかもしれません。
The figure at the lower right without a white cap is a priest. People say his face looks like Gauguin's own. The painter may have put himself into the picture.
ゴーギャンはこの絵のスケッチを手紙にそえて、アルルのゴッホに送りました。その約1か月後の1888年10月、ゴーギャンはアルルへ向かい、「黄色い家」でゴッホとの共同生活が始まります。
Gauguin sent a sketch of this painting in a letter to Van Gogh in Arles. About a month later, in October 1888, Gauguin went to Arles and began living with Van Gogh in the Yellow House.
