Story1889年、ブルターニュ地方のポン＝タヴァンでゴーギャンが描いた絵です。黄色く色づいた秋の畑を背景に、十字架にかけられた黄色いキリスト。その足もとには、ブルターニュの民族衣装を着た3人の女性が静かに座っています。遠くの道では、一人の男が石垣をこえようとしています。
Gauguin painted this in Pont-Aven, Brittany, in 1889. A yellow Christ hangs on a cross in front of yellow autumn fields. Three women in traditional Breton dress sit quietly at its foot. On a road in the distance, a man is climbing over a stone wall.
モデルは、ポン＝タヴァン近くのトレマロ礼拝堂にある、素朴な木のキリスト像でした。ゴーギャンはキリストをあざやかな黄色で描き、まわりの木々を赤やオレンジに、地面を黄色にして、画面全体を秋の色でまとめました。太い輪郭線と平らな色は、前の年の『説教のあとの幻影』と同じ新しいスタイルです。
The model was a simple wooden statue of Christ in the Trémalo Chapel near Pont-Aven. Gauguin painted Christ a vivid yellow and painted the trees red and orange and the ground yellow, so the whole picture is full of autumn colours. The thick outlines and flat colours are the same new style he used in 'Vision after the Sermon' the year before.

Gauguin seems to have treasured this painting. Around the next year, he painted it, reversed, in the background of his 'Self-Portrait with the Yellow Christ' (Musée d'Orsay). In 1946, it entered the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in the USA. In 2023, the museum changed its name to the Buffalo AKG Art Museum.

This is a yellow Christ on a cross. Gauguin painted it in Brittany, France, in 1889. The model was an old wooden statue in a small church. You can still see that statue today! The fields and trees have autumn colors.

The wooden statue that inspired this painting still hangs in the Trémalo Chapel. You can go and see the same statue that Gauguin saw more than 130 years ago. Comparing them shows what Gauguin changed.

In his 'Self-Portrait with the Yellow Christ', this painting appears reversed behind Gauguin. He probably painted himself in a mirror, so the picture behind him was flipped too.
都会のパリをはなれたゴーギャンは、古い信仰や民族衣装が残るブルターニュに、素朴で力強いものをもとめました。友人への手紙で、ブルターニュには「野生的で原始的なもの」がある、と書いています。これは都会から来たゴーギャンの、あこがれまじりの見方でした。
Gauguin left the big city of Paris and looked for something simple and strong in Brittany, where old beliefs and traditional clothes remained. He wrote to a friend that he found 'the wild and the primitive' there. These words show the romantic view of a man from the city, not simply what life in Brittany was like.
この絵がある美術館は、長い間「オールブライト＝ノックス美術館」と呼ばれていましたが、2023年に「バッファローAKG美術館」と名前を変えました。古い本では、前の名前で紹介されています。
The museum that owns this painting was long called the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. In 2023, it became the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, so older books use the old name.
