パリに生まれ、幼いころを南米ペルーで過ごしました。船乗りを経て株の仲買人として成功し、休みの日に絵を描いていましたが、35歳ごろ画家に専念します。ブルターニュやアルルで、平らで強い色と太い輪郭の新しい絵を生み出しました。その後タヒチへ渡り、南の島の人々と自然を描き、マルキーズ諸島で亡くなりました。
Gauguin was born in Paris and spent his early childhood in Peru. He worked as a sailor, then became a successful stockbroker who painted on weekends. Around 35, he decided to paint full-time. In Brittany and Arles, he created a new style with flat, strong colors and bold outlines. Later he moved to Tahiti and painted its people and nature. He died in the Marquesas Islands.
