Story1889年5月、ゴッホが南フランスのサン＝レミにある療養院に入って、すぐに描いた絵です。描かれたのは療養院の庭に咲くアイリス。青紫の花と、剣のように伸びる緑の葉が、画面いっぱいにうねっています。その中に1本だけ、白い花がまじっています。今はロサンゼルスのゲティ美術館にあります。
Van Gogh painted this in May 1889, soon after he entered a hospital in Saint-Rémy, in the south of France. It shows irises in the hospital garden. Blue-purple flowers and sword-like green leaves fill the whole picture. Among them, there is one white flower. The painting is now in the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
くっきりした輪郭線と平らな色には、日本の浮世絵の影響が見られます。ゴッホは絵を描くことで心を落ちつけようとしていました。この絵はその年の9月、パリのアンデパンダン展に『ローヌ川の星月夜』とならんで出品され、弟テオは「空気と命にあふれた美しい習作」とほめました。
The strong outlines and flat colours show the influence of Japanese prints. Painting helped Van Gogh calm his mind. In September that year, the picture was shown at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris next to 'Starry Night Over the Rhône'. His brother Theo called it 'a beautiful study full of air and life'.

After Van Gogh's death, the painting belonged to Père Tanguy, the paint seller. In 1892, the critic Octave Mirbeau bought it for 300 francs. In 1987, it sold at auction for 53.9 million dollars, a new auction record for a painting at the time. Since 1990, it has been a treasure of the Getty Museum.

Secrets調査で、花びらの青い絵の具に、光であせやすい赤い顔料が混ぜられていたことが分かりました。ゴッホは青と赤で紫を作りましたが、のちに赤の多くがあせて、青く見えるようになったのです。茶色の土も、もとはもっとあざやかな赤やオレンジだったと考えられています。
Scientists found traces of a red pigment that fades in light, mixed with the blue paint of the petals. Van Gogh mixed blue and red to make purple, but much of the red later faded, so the flowers now look blue. The brown soil was probably bright red or orange, too.
1987年に5390万ドルで落札したのは、オーストラリアの実業家アラン・ボンドでした。彼はオークション会社サザビーズからお金を借りて買いましたが、経営難で返せなくなり、絵はサザビーズへ戻りました。1990年、サザビーズはこの絵をゲティ美術館に売りました。
The buyer in 1987 was the Australian businessman Alan Bond. He borrowed money from the auction house Sotheby's to buy it. But his business got into trouble and he could not pay it back, so the painting went back to Sotheby's. In 1990, Sotheby's sold it to the Getty Museum.
1892年、批評家ミルボーはこの絵をタンギーから300フランで買いました。それからおよそ100年後には5390万ドル。生きている間ほとんど絵が売れなかったゴッホの評価が、どれほど変わったかを物語っています。
In 1892, the critic Mirbeau paid 300 francs for this painting. About a hundred years later, it sold for 53.9 million dollars. It shows how much the world changed its mind about Van Gogh, who sold very few paintings in his life.
1890年5月、療養院を出る直前にも、ゴッホは花びんにさしたアイリスの絵を2枚描きました（メトロポリタン美術館とファン・ゴッホ美術館にあります）。サン＝レミでの1年は、アイリスに始まりアイリスに終わったのです。
In May 1890, just before he left the hospital, Van Gogh painted two more pictures of irises in a vase. They are now in the Metropolitan Museum and the Van Gogh Museum. His year in Saint-Rémy began and ended with irises.
