Van Gogh painted this self-portrait in Arles in January 1889. He wears a fur cap and a green coat, and there is a white bandage on his face. A few weeks earlier, on the night of 23 December 1888, he had cut off most of his left ear. Soon after leaving hospital, he sat in front of a mirror and painted himself.
Before the incident, Van Gogh and Gauguin lived together in the Yellow House, but their arguments grew worse. After a heated argument, Van Gogh injured his ear, and Gauguin left Arles soon afterwards. Behind Van Gogh, there is an easel on the left and a Japanese print on the right. Some say they show that he was ready to paint again.
When Van Gogh died, this painting belonged to Père Tanguy, the paint seller in Paris. In 1928, the British businessman Samuel Courtauld bought it. It is now in the Courtauld Gallery in London. Around the same time, Van Gogh painted another bandaged self-portrait with a pipe, which is in a private collection.
This is Van Gogh. He painted himself in a mirror in 1889. Look at the white bandage on his face. A few weeks before, he hurt his ear. Behind him, there is a Japanese picture. He loved Japanese art very much.
In the picture, the bandage seems to be on his right side. But he painted himself in a mirror, so left and right are reversed. In fact, it was his left ear. In his self-portrait in the Musée d'Orsay, he turned so that the injured ear is hidden.
The print on the right is a copy of 'Geishas in a Landscape', a Japanese print made by Satō Torakiyo in the 1870s. Van Gogh painted the mountain and the geishas in much freer colours than the original.
For a long time, some people said he cut off only his earlobe. In 2016, researcher Bernadette Murphy found a drawing by Dr Rey, who treated him, in a library in the USA. It showed that almost the whole ear was cut off.
When Van Gogh died, this painting was with Père Tanguy, the paint seller in Paris. No one knows how he got it. Tanguy is the same man Van Gogh painted in his famous portrait.
