Van Gogh painted this self-portrait in Arles in January 1889. He wears a fur cap and a green coat, and there is a white bandage on his face. A few weeks earlier, on the night of 23 December 1888, he had cut off most of his left ear. Soon after leaving hospital, he sat in front of a mirror and painted himself.

Fun Fact（訳）
包帯の位置は「鏡のトリック」 絵では顔の右側（見る人から見て左）に包帯がありますが、ゴッホは鏡を見ながら描いたので、左右が逆になっています。実際にけがをしたのは左耳でした。オルセー美術館の自画像では、反対にけがをした耳がかくれる向きで描かれています。
