In 1889, Van Gogh was staying at a hospital in Saint-Rémy, in the south of France. This painting is based on the view from his window before sunrise. It shows a swirling sky, a flame-like cypress tree and a quiet, sleeping village. It is now in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and is often called the most famous night sky in art.
After hurting his own ear in December 1888, Van Gogh suffered from mental illness. In May 1889, he chose to enter the hospital. His bedroom window had iron bars, and in the daytime he used another room as a studio. He painted this picture during the day, mixing memory and imagination. He used thick paint and bold strokes for the swirls and the light of the stars.
Van Gogh died in 1890 at the age of 37, and this painting was never sold in his lifetime. After passing through several owners, it came to the Museum of Modern Art in 1941. Today it appears in songs, films and goods everywhere. Don McLean's song 'Vincent' is known as a tribute to this painting and to Van Gogh.
This is a night sky. Big swirls move across the sky. A dark tree stands on the left. Van Gogh painted this in a hospital. He saw the view from his window.

In a letter to his painter friend Émile Bernard, Van Gogh wrote that he had reached for stars that were too big, and that it was another failure. The world's most famous night sky was, to its own painter, a picture that did not work out.
In 2024, researchers from China and France reported that the sizes and brightness of the swirls look like the patterns of turbulence, the way air and water swirl in nature. But in 2025, other scientists argued that their method could not prove this. The debate goes on.
Van Gogh wrote to Theo that before sunrise he looked out of his window for a long time, when only the morning star was shining, looking very big. Astronomers have confirmed that Venus was shining brightly in the dawn sky at that time.
From the hospital window, Van Gogh could really see a wheat field and hills. The village in the painting is mostly imagined. The pointed church steeple is said to look more like a church in his home country, the Netherlands, than one in southern France.

Look Closer1糸杉Cypress tree
The cypress rises like a flame. In Europe, cypresses often grow in graveyards, so they are linked with death and eternity.
Crescent moon
The crescent moon glows inside a ring of light like a sun. Some calculations say the real moon was not a crescent at that time, so imagination is mixed in here.
Church steeple
A thin spire points straight up from the village. Its shape reminds people of churches in the Netherlands.
The morning star
The big, bright star just right of the cypress. It is thought to be Venus, seen before dawn.
