1888年6月、南フランスのアルル郊外に広がるラ・クローの平野を描いた作品です。黄金色の麦畑がパッチワークのように続き、遠くには青いアルピーユの山なみ。真ん中には青い荷車、左には麦わらの山とはしご。畑のあちこちで、麦を刈ったり運んだりする人びとが小さく描かれています。

This painting shows the plain of La Crau outside Arles, in the south of France, in June 1888. Golden wheat fields stretch out like a patchwork quilt, with the blue Alpilles hills far away. A blue cart stands in the middle, and a haystack with a ladder rises on the left. Small figures cut and carry wheat here and there in the fields.

ゴッホは高い場所から見下ろすようにこの景色を描きました。アルルの東のはずれにあった風車の台の上から描いた、という説もあります。絵のほとんどは真昼の太陽の下で1日のうちに描かれ、あとでアトリエで筆あとを整えて仕上げました。同じ景色の水彩の習作は妹ヴィルに送られ、今はアメリカのハーバード美術館にあります。

Van Gogh painted this view as if looking down from a high place. One idea is that he painted it from the platform of a windmill on the eastern edge of Arles. Most of the picture was painted in a single day under the midday sun, and he later adjusted the brushstrokes in his studio. A watercolor study of the same view was sent to his sister Wil and is now at the Harvard Art Museums.

ゴッホは弟テオへの手紙で、この絵は当時のほかの作品を「すべて打ち負かす」と書いています。けれど絵は売れず、テオ、その妻ヨー、息子のフィンセント・ウィレムへと家族の手で守られました。1973年からファン・ゴッホ美術館の作品となり、今では館の顔ともいえる一枚です。

In a letter to his brother Theo, Van Gogh wrote that this canvas 'absolutely kills' his other recent works. But the painting did not sell. It was kept by the family: Theo, his wife Jo and their son Vincent Willem. Since 1973 it has belonged to the Van Gogh Museum, where it is one of the most important works.
