In June 1888, Van Gogh, who lived in Arles, took a trip of about a week to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a fishing village on the Mediterranean. This work shows four small boats pulled up on the beach there. Red, green and blue boats lie on the yellow sand, and the blue one has the word 'AMITIÉ' (friendship) on it. It is drawn with pen and watercolor, not oil paint.
The fishing boats left very early in the morning, so Van Gogh made quick drawings on the beach. Back in Arles, he finished an oil painting with the same composition, now in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. This watercolor shows the same scene and is thought to have been made after the oil. Its strong outlines and flat, bright colors come from Japanese prints.
This watercolor later belonged to Bernhard Koehler, a collector in Berlin, Germany. After the Second World War, many works from German private collections were taken to the Soviet Union and kept hidden for decades in the State Hermitage Museum. In 1996 the Hermitage showed these drawings in an exhibition, and this watercolor was among them. It is reported to be in Russia today, and it is rarely seen.
Four small boats are on a sunny beach. They are red, green and blue. One boat has a name: AMITIE. It means 'friendship' in French. Van Gogh made this picture with pencil, pen, ink and watercolors.

'AMITIÉ' on the side of the blue boat means 'friendship' in French. At this time, Van Gogh dreamed of a 'Studio of the South', where artist friends would live and work together. Some people link that dream with the name of this boat.
In a letter to his brother Theo, Van Gogh wrote that the Mediterranean has the color of a mackerel. He meant that it keeps changing with the light, from green to purple to blue, and even pink or gray. In the sea on the right, blue and purple mix together.
On this trip, Van Gogh also painted an oil picture of the sea itself. Grains of sand have been found in its paint, which is thought to show that he painted it on the windy beach. Sand from Saintes-Maries is still inside the artwork.
This watercolor once belonged to Koehler, a collector in Berlin. After the war, many works from German private collections were taken to the Soviet Union, and for about 50 years their existence was kept secret. In 1996 this watercolor was finally shown in an exhibition of these drawings at the Hermitage.
