Four small boats are on a sunny beach. They are red, green and blue. One boat has a name: AMITIE. It means 'friendship' in French. Van Gogh made this picture with pencil, pen, ink and watercolors.

In June 1888, Van Gogh, who lived in Arles, took a trip of about a week to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a fishing village on the Mediterranean. This work shows four small boats pulled up on the beach there. Red, green and blue boats lie on the yellow sand, and the blue one has the word 'AMITIÉ' (friendship) on it. It is drawn with pen and watercolor, not oil paint.
