オランダのズンデルトで牧師の家に生まれました。画商の店員、教師、伝道師などを経て、27歳でようやく画家になる決心をします。パリで印象派や浮世絵に出会って色が明るくなり、南フランスのアルルやサン＝レミで《ひまわり》《星月夜》などを描きました。画家として活動したのは約10年で、37歳で亡くなりました。
Van Gogh was born in Zundert, the Netherlands, the son of a pastor. He worked as an art dealer's assistant, a teacher and a preacher. At 27, he finally decided to become an artist. In Paris, Impressionism and Japanese prints made his colors brighter. In Arles and Saint-Rémy in southern France, he painted Sunflowers and The Starry Night. His career as a painter lasted only about ten years. He died at 37.
