この作品のお話
Story明るい黄色の背景の前で、黒い服の女性がほおづえをついて座っています。テーブルには赤い日傘と手ぶくろ。モデルは、アルルの駅前でカフェを営んでいたマリー・ジヌー夫人です。1888年11月に、オランダ出身の画家ゴッホが描いた作品で、今はパリのオルセー美術館にあります。
A woman in a black dress sits in front of a bright yellow background, resting her chin on her hand. On the table are a red parasol and gloves. The model is Madame Ginoux, who ran a café in Arles. Van Gogh painted it in November 1888. It is now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
ジヌー夫人と夫は、アルル駅前広場の「カフェ・ド・ラ・ガール」を営んでいて、ゴッホは一時そこに部屋を借りていました。名作『夜のカフェ』の舞台もこの店です。1888年11月の初め、夫人はゴッホとゴーギャンの二人のためにモデルをつとめ、ゴッホはその場で油絵を、ゴーギャンは木炭の素描を描きました。
Madame Ginoux and her husband ran the Café de la Gare in Arles, and Van Gogh once rented a room there. It is also the café in his famous painting 'The Night Café.' In early November 1888, she posed for both Van Gogh and Gauguin. Van Gogh painted her in oil, while Gauguin made a charcoal drawing.
ゴッホはのちに、サン＝レミの療養院で、ゴーギャンの素描をもとにした『アルルの女』をさらに5点描きました。そのうち1点はジヌー夫人へのおくり物でしたが、届けに行ったアルルでゴッホは体調をくずしてしまいます。その絵は、行方がわからないとされています。
Later, at the hospital in Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh painted five more versions of 'L'Arlésienne' based on Gauguin's drawing. One of them was a gift for Madame Ginoux. But when he went to Arles to deliver it, Van Gogh fell ill again. That painting is said to be lost.
この女性はジヌー夫人です。アルルでカフェを営んでいました。座って考えごとをしています。ゴッホはたった1時間ほどで彼女を描きました！友だちのゴーギャンも同じときに彼女を描きました。
This woman is Madame Ginoux. She had a café in Arles. She sits and thinks. Van Gogh painted her in about one hour! His friend Gauguin drew her at the same time.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secretsゴッホは弟テオへの手紙に、この絵を「1時間で」一気に描きあげたと書いています。高さ90センチをこえる大きな肖像画を、モデルを前にして、ほとんど一気に仕上げたのです。すごい集中力です。
Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo that he dashed off this picture in one hour. It is a large portrait, more than 90 centimeters tall, and he finished it almost in one go in front of the model.
この絵が描かれているのは、ゴーギャンがアルルに着いてすぐ買った、目のあらいジュート（麻袋に使う布）です。二人はこの布を分け合い、11月から12月にかけて、いくつもの絵を描きました。
This picture is painted on coarse burlap, a cloth used for sacks, which Gauguin bought soon after he arrived in Arles. The two artists shared it and painted several pictures on it in November and December.
ゴーギャンは同じ日に描いた素描をもとに、油絵『アルルの夜のカフェ』を描き、手前にジヌー夫人を大きく登場させました。この絵は今、モスクワのプーシキン美術館にあります。
Gauguin used the drawing from that same session to paint 'Night Café at Arles,' with Madame Ginoux large in the front. That painting is now in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow.
ニューヨークのメトロポリタン美術館にも、よく似た『アルルの女』があります。そちらでは日傘と手ぶくろのかわりに、テーブルに本が3冊置かれています。くらべてみるとおもしろい「まちがい探し」です。
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has a very similar 'L'Arlésienne.' In that one, there are three books on the table instead of the parasol and gloves. Comparing them is like a spot-the-difference game.
