Story金ボタンの青い制服を着て、「POSTES（郵便）」と書かれた帽子をかぶった男性が、いすに座っています。南フランスのアルルでゴッホと親しくなったジョゼフ・ルーランです。1888年8月の初めに描かれた、ゴッホが描いた最初のルーランの肖像画で、今はアメリカのボストン美術館にあります。
A man in a blue uniform with gold buttons sits in a chair. His cap says 'POSTES,' which means 'post' in French. He is Joseph Roulin, who became Van Gogh's friend in Arles, in the south of France. Van Gogh painted it in early August 1888. It was his first portrait of Roulin, and it is now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
ルーランは、アルル駅で郵便の仕事をしていました。ゴッホは彼だけでなく、妻オーギュスティーヌと3人の子どもたちの肖像も何枚も描いています。大きな手、立派なひげ、少し照れたような目つき。モデルへの親しみが、のびのびした筆づかいから伝わってきます。
Roulin handled the mail at the Arles railway station. Van Gogh painted not only him but also his wife, Augustine, and their three children, many times. Look at the big hands, the fine beard and the slightly shy eyes. The relaxed brushwork may suggest Van Gogh's warm feelings for his model.
1888年12月、ゴッホが心の病で倒れたとき、ルーランは彼を見舞い、弟テオに様子を手紙で知らせるなど、親身になって支えました。翌年、ルーランは仕事の都合でマルセイユへ移りますが、その後も二人の友情は続きました。この絵は、のちにボストンの収集家から美術館に贈られました。
In December 1888, when Van Gogh became seriously ill, Roulin visited him and wrote to Theo about how he was. He was a caring friend. The next year, Roulin moved to Marseille for his job, but their friendship continued. Later, a Boston collector gave this painting to the museum.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets日本では「郵便配達人」の名で知られていますが、ルーランの仕事は、家々に手紙を配ることではなく、駅で郵便物をあつかう係だったと考えられています。駅に着く郵便列車の荷物を受けもっていたのです。
In Japan and elsewhere, he is known as 'the postman.' But Roulin probably did not deliver letters to homes. He handled the mail at the railway station, working with the mail that came by train.
ゴッホは手紙の中で、ルーランを古代ギリシャの哲学者ソクラテスにたびたびたとえました。とても善良で、かしこく、思いやりがあって、人を信じる人だと、心からほめています。
In his letters, Van Gogh often compared Roulin to Socrates, the ancient Greek thinker. He praised him as a very good, wise, warm-hearted and trusting man.
ゴッホはルーラン本人、妻オーギュスティーヌ、息子のアルマンとカミーユ、赤ちゃんのマルセルの一家5人全員を、それぞれ何度も描きました。ジョゼフの肖像だけでも、数点が残っています。
Van Gogh painted all five members of the family, each more than once: Joseph, his wife Augustine, their sons Armand and Camille, and baby Marcelle. Several portraits of Joseph alone still exist.
2017年の映画『ゴッホ～最期の手紙～』は、ゴッホのタッチをまねた油絵を何万枚も使って作られました。物語は、ルーランの息子アルマンが、父にたのまれてゴッホの手紙を届けに行くところから始まります。
The 2017 film 'Loving Vincent' was made from tens of thousands of oil paintings in Van Gogh's style. The story begins when Roulin's son Armand is asked by his father to deliver one of Van Gogh's letters.
