In an autumn vineyard lit by the setting sun, many people are picking grapes. On the right, a rain-wet road shines yellow as it reflects the setting sun. Van Gogh painted this in November 1888 in Arles, in the south of France. It is now in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, Russia.
At this time, the painter Paul Gauguin was living with Van Gogh in the Yellow House in Arles. In a letter to Theo, Van Gogh wrote that on a Sunday outing they saw a vineyard as red as red wine. Gauguin encouraged painting from memory and imagination, and this picture may show that influence.
In 1890, the painting was shown at the exhibition of Les XX (The Twenty) in Brussels, Belgium. The painter Anna Boch bought it for 400 francs. Later the Russian collector Ivan Morozov acquired it. After the Russian Revolution, it was nationalized and entered the State Museum of New Western Art in Moscow. It was transferred to the Pushkin Museum in 1948.
People pick grapes in a red field. The sun is low in the sky. Van Gogh painted this in 1888. In 1890, a painter named Anna Boch bought it. People still remember this sale.

This painting is famous because its sale in Van Gogh's lifetime is clearly recorded. But the story that it was the only painting he ever sold is a myth. There are records of other sales and trades of his works.
The buyer, Anna Boch, was a Belgian painter and collector. Her younger brother, Eugène Boch, was a painter who became Van Gogh's friend in Arles, and Van Gogh painted his portrait. The sale grew out of friendship.
Anna and Eugène Boch came from the family behind Villeroy & Boch, the ceramics company still famous for tableware. Born into a wealthy family, Anna actively collected works by emerging artists.
In a letter to Theo, Van Gogh mentioned that the Bochs paid the full exhibition price. He seemed a little embarrassed, feeling that a friend could have paid less.
