A pair of worn leather shoes stands on a reddish tile floor. Van Gogh painted it in 1888, probably in his studio in the Yellow House in Arles, in the south of France. The tiles in the background are the same as the floor of the Yellow House. It is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
For Van Gogh, shoes were an important subject that stood for the lives of working people. He had already painted shoes several times in Paris. We do not know who owned this pair. They may have belonged to Patience Escalier, an old farmer whose portrait he painted around the same time, or to Van Gogh himself.
In a letter to the painter Émile Bernard in October 1888, Van Gogh mentioned a still life of an old pair of shoes. The Met bought this painting in 1992. Later, Van Gogh's shoe paintings became a topic for philosophers and art historians thinking about what art really is.
This is a pair of old shoes. They are on a red tile floor. The laces are loose. Who wore them? Nobody knows! Maybe a farmer, maybe Van Gogh.
The German philosopher Martin Heidegger wrote about a pair of shoes painted by Van Gogh as a peasant woman's shoes. The art historian Meyer Schapiro answered that they were Van Gogh's own shoes, and a famous debate began. The painting they discussed was probably an earlier one from Paris.
A painter friend from Paris remembered that Van Gogh bought old shoes at a flea market. He wore them in the rain until they were muddy, and then he painted them. He loved well-used shoes more than shiny new ones.
The red tiles in the background match the floor of the Yellow House in Arles. Together with his letter, this shows the painting was made in the Yellow House in Arles, not in Paris.
In 1880, Van Gogh walked for days from Belgium to Courrières in France to meet the painter Jules Breton, whom he admired. But when he reached the studio, he felt too shy and went back without knocking.
