In September 1888, Van Gogh painted the Yellow House where he lived in Arles, and the streets around it. Under a deep blue sky, the yellow building with green shutters is his house. On the right, a train puffs smoke as it crosses a railway bridge, and people walk along the street. It is in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
In May 1888, Van Gogh rented four rooms in the right side of the building at 2 Place Lamartine. Downstairs were his studio and kitchen, and upstairs were his bedroom and a guest room. He dreamed of making it a 'Studio of the South', where artists could live and paint together. At the end of October, Gauguin arrived, and they lived together for about nine weeks.
But in December, their life together ended with the ear incident. The Yellow House still stood after that, but on 25 June 1944, during the Second World War, it was badly damaged by bombing and later pulled down. Today, paintings like this one and 'The Bedroom' show us what his home was like.

Among the upstairs windows, the one nearest the corner with open shutters is said to be the guest room. The next one, with shutters almost closed, was Van Gogh's bedroom. Gauguin later stayed in the guest room.
Van Gogh often ate at a nearby restaurant run by a widow named Venissac. She was once said to be his landlady, but research on Van Gogh's letters shows that someone else owned the Yellow House.
The café in his famous painting 'The Night Café' was very close to the Yellow House. Van Gogh wrote that it is not in this picture but is to the left of the restaurant. The area around the Yellow House was full of places from his famous works.
At the end of the street, there were two railway bridges. One was for the local line to Lunel, and the other belonged to the big railway company linking Paris, Lyon and the Mediterranean. The Yellow House stood in a busy place near the station.
