この作品のお話
Story大またで畑を歩きながら、男が片手で種をまいています。描いたのはオランダ出身の画家フィンセント・ファン・ゴッホ。1890年1月、南フランス・サン＝レミの療養院にいたときに、尊敬するフランスの画家ジャン＝フランソワ・ミレーの『種まく人』をもとに描きました。今はオランダのクレラー＝ミュラー美術館にあります。
A man takes big steps across a field and throws seeds with one hand. Vincent van Gogh, the Dutch painter, made this in January 1890, while he was at a hospital in Saint-Rémy in the south of France. He based it on 'The Sower' by Jean-François Millet, a French painter he admired. It is now in the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands.
冬が近づき、外で描けない日が多くなると、ゴッホはミレーなどの絵の白黒の複製を見ながら、それを油絵に描き直しました。ゴッホはこれを、音楽家が作曲家の曲を自分なりに演奏するようなものだ、と弟テオへの手紙に書いています。白黒の原画に、青や黄、緑のうねる筆あとで新しい色をつけたのです。
As winter came and he often could not paint outdoors, Van Gogh copied black-and-white reproductions of works by Millet and others in oil paint. In a letter to his brother Theo, he compared this to a musician playing a composer's music in his own way. He gave the black-and-white image new colors, with swirling strokes of blue, yellow and green.
この絵は、オランダの大収集家ヘレーネ・クレラー＝ミュラーが集めたゴッホ・コレクションの1点です。彼女はゴッホの作品をたくさん買い集め、のちに国立公園の森の中に美術館を開きました。この絵は今もそこで、ゴッホがミレーにささげた深い敬意を伝えています。
This painting is part of the Van Gogh collection gathered by Helene Kröller-Müller, a great Dutch collector. She bought many of his works and later opened a museum in the woods of a national park. There, the painting still shows Van Gogh's deep respect for Millet.

Secrets画家をめざしはじめた1880年ごろ、ゴッホはミレーの『種まく人』を何度も模写して、絵の勉強をしました。その後も種まく人は、生涯で何十回も描いたお気に入りのテーマになりました。
When he began to train as an artist around 1880, Van Gogh copied Millet's 'The Sower' again and again to learn drawing. After that, the sower became one of his favorite subjects, and he drew and painted it dozens of times.
日本の出版社・岩波書店のマークは、ミレーの『種まく人』をもとにしています。知識の種をまく、という思いがこめられています。ゴッホと岩波書店は、同じ「お手本」を持つ仲間なのです。
The logo of Iwanami Shoten, a Japanese publisher, is based on Millet's 'The Sower.' It stands for spreading the seeds of knowledge. So Van Gogh and this publisher share the same model.
ミレーの『種まく人』には、よく似た油絵が2点あります。1点はアメリカのボストン美術館に、もう1点は日本の山梨県立美術館にあります。ゴッホの「先生」の名画に、日本でも会えるのです。
Millet painted two very similar oil versions of 'The Sower.' One is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the other is in the Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art in Japan. You can see the work that taught Van Gogh right in Japan.
ヘレーネ・クレラー＝ミュラーは、ゴッホの油絵を約90点、素描も180点以上集めました。今、そのコレクションは、オランダのデ・ホーヘ・フェルウェ国立公園の森の中の美術館で見ることができます。
Helene Kröller-Müller collected about 90 paintings and more than 180 drawings by Van Gogh. Today, you can see them in a museum inside the forest of De Hoge Veluwe National Park in the Netherlands.

奥の地平線のあたりに、動物に引かせて畑をたがやす人が、小さくぼんやりと見えます。ミレーの原画にもある場面です。
Near the horizon, you can just see a small figure plowing with an animal. This also appears in Millet's original.
4帽子のかげの顔A face under the hat
帽子のかげで、顔ははっきり見えません。そのため、特定の一人というより、働く人々の象徴のようにも見えます。
His face is hidden in the shadow of his hat. This can make him seem less like one particular person and more like a symbol of working people.
