Under a deep blue sky, a stone church seems to bend and sway. In front, the path splits in two, and a woman walks along the left-hand path. Van Gogh painted it in June 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise, a village northwest of Paris. It is now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
In May 1890, Van Gogh left the hospital in Saint-Rémy and moved to Auvers. He is said to have painted about 70 pictures in about 70 days there. In a letter to his sister Wil, he described the church as violet against a sky of 'pure cobalt.' He said it was almost the same as his old studies of a church tower in the Netherlands, but with richer color.
That July, Van Gogh died in this village at the age of 37, and he is buried in the village cemetery. Later, his brother Theo was buried next to him. The church still stands in the same place, so visitors can compare it with the painting. The painting was acquired for the French national museums in 1952.

The path and grass in front are bright in the sun, but much of the church is painted in shadowy blues and violets, as if it sits in its own shadow. Even the stained-glass windows are a deep blue like the sky. Is it day or night? The light is strange.
In 2010, the popular British science-fiction show 'Doctor Who' had an episode with Van Gogh. At the Musée d'Orsay, the heroes spot a monster's face in a window of this church painting, and a time-travel adventure begins.
The old church tower in Nuenen, in the Netherlands, which Van Gogh remembered in his letter, was torn down in 1885. Before that, he had painted the tower and its churchyard many times. In the letter, he compared his painting of the church at Auvers with those earlier studies from Nuenen.
In the Auvers cemetery, the graves of Vincent and Theo lie side by side, covered with ivy. It is said that the ivy came from the garden of Dr. Gachet, who cared for Van Gogh. Many people still visit to leave flowers.
