Story

A green vase full of roses stands in front of a light green background. Some roses have fallen onto the table. Van Gogh painted it in May 1890, just before he left the hospital in Saint-Rémy in the south of France. It is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

During his year at the hospital, Van Gogh painted almost no serious still lifes. But just before he left, he painted four large pictures of spring flowers: two of irises and two of roses. The Met explains that he thought of them as a set, like the Sunflowers series he had painted in Arles.

The roses look white today, but they were once pink. The red paint Van Gogh used was very sensitive to light, and it faded over the years. The painting was part of the collection of Walter and Leonore Annenberg, American business leaders, and it was later given to the Met.
