Bigger than a ship, bigger than the Eiffel Tower: a very confident self-portrait!
In 1890, Henri Rousseau painted this large picture of himself. He wears a black beret and holds a palette and a brush. He stands on the bank of the Seine in Paris. Behind him are a ship with many flags, an iron bridge and the Eiffel Tower, which had just been finished the year before. A balloon floats in the sky. The painting is now in the National Gallery Prague.
Rousseau called this a 'portrait-landscape'. It is said he thought he had invented a new kind of picture that joined a person and a landscape. It was shown at the Salon des Indépendants, an exhibition with no judges, in 1890. The perspective is strange, and the painter is much bigger than the ship and the people around him. This direct, strong style came from an artist who never went to art school.
In those days, many people laughed at Rousseau's paintings and said they looked like children's drawings. Still, he proudly painted himself as an artist and kept on painting. In the 20th century, young artists such as Picasso praised his free style, and Rousseau became the leading 'naive' painter. This self-portrait shows his confidence.
This is Rousseau. He painted himself in Paris. He holds a palette. Behind him, you can see a ship and the Eiffel Tower. He made himself very big!
The palette in Rousseau's hand has the names of his two wives, Clémence and Joséphine. His first wife, Clémence, died in 1888, and he later married Joséphine. The palette was also a place to keep the memory of the people he loved.
For many years, Rousseau worked at the office that taxed goods coming into Paris. That is why he is called 'Le Douanier', the customs officer. He learned to paint while working, largely in his own way, though he is said to have received private guidance from the academic painters Clément and Gérôme. In 1893 he left the job to devote himself to painting.
In the background, next to the Eiffel Tower built for the 1889 World's Fair, there is an iron bridge. It is thought to resemble the old Pont du Carrousel, which no longer exists. The painting shows what was new in Paris more than 130 years ago.
There is a story that when Rousseau painted portraits, he measured the model's nose and mouth with a ruler and copied the numbers onto the canvas. He tried to be exact, but the result often looked strange. Many people say that is part of his charm.
