In 1890, Henri Rousseau painted this large picture of himself. He wears a black beret and holds a palette and a brush. He stands on the bank of the Seine in Paris. Behind him are a ship with many flags, an iron bridge and the Eiffel Tower, which had just been finished the year before. A balloon floats in the sky. The painting is now in the National Gallery Prague.

🦉 Fun Fact! The palette in Rousseau's hand has the names of his two wives, Clémence and Joséphine. His first wife, Clémence, died in 1888, and he later married Joséphine. The palette was also a place to keep the memory of the people he loved.
