A tiger in a stormy jungle! But the painter never visited a jungle.
This is Henri Rousseau's first jungle painting, from 1891. Trees and grass bend in a violent storm, and lightning flashes across the sky. A tiger looks out from the grass with wide eyes and bared teeth. Is it surprised, or is it hunting? The painting is in the National Gallery in London.
Rousseau never left France. He imagined the jungle plants from the greenhouses of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris and from pictures in books. He painted the rain as many thin silver lines across the canvas. Look at how carefully he painted every leaf, using many shades of green.
In 1891, it was shown with the title 'Surprised!' at the Salon des Indépendants, an exhibition open to all artists. Some people laughed at it, but the painter Félix Vallotton praised it as a must-see. Rousseau later painted around 20 jungle pictures. The National Gallery acquired this one in 1972.
A tiger is in a jungle during a big storm. Wind and rain fill the picture. The tiger looks surprised. Rousseau never visited a jungle! He got ideas from plants in a garden in Paris.

Rousseau said he had seen real jungles when he went to Mexico with the army as a young man. But records show he never left France. His jungles were all imagined.
Rousseau later said that the tiger is about to jump on a group of explorers. But no explorers appear in the picture. Maybe the tiger is looking at us, standing in front of the painting!
Rousseau taught himself to paint and started seriously at about 40, while working at the toll office. He retired at 49 to paint full time. He made this picture while he was still working there.
If you look closely, thin diagonal lines cover the whole picture. Rousseau added these see-through, silver-gray stripes over the finished picture to create the feeling of a storm. The rain falls over the tiger and the grass, too.
