A sofa in the jungle!? The last dream of a painter who never saw a jungle.
Henri Rousseau painted this in 1910. It is the largest of his jungle paintings. In a thick forest, a woman lies on a sofa on the left and reaches out her hand. Lions stare out from the plants. Near a figure playing a pipe, there are birds, monkeys, an elephant and a snake. A white moon shines in the sky.
Why is there a sofa in the jungle? In a letter to a critic, Rousseau explained it: a woman asleep on a sofa dreams that she has been carried into this forest, where she hears the music of a charmer's instrument. Rousseau never visited a jungle. He studied plants and animals at the Jardin des Plantes and the natural history museum in Paris. He had worked as a toll collector for the city, so people called him "Le Douanier" (the customs officer).
The painting was first shown in March 1910. The poet Guillaume Apollinaire praised it and wrote that it "radiates beauty." Rousseau died that September, so this became his last great work. Nelson A. Rockefeller bought it in 1953 and gave it to The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York in 1954.
This is a jungle at night. Can you see the two lions? There is a sofa in the jungle! A woman is having a dream. Rousseau never went to a jungle. He looked at plants in a garden in Paris.
Rousseau never left France and never saw a real jungle. He used the greenhouses of the Jardin des Plantes, stuffed animals and pictures in books to create his imaginary forest. His story about serving as a soldier in Mexico is thought to be untrue.
Rousseau thought some people might not understand the painting. So he wrote a short poem to go with it. It begins, "Yadwigha, in a beautiful dream." Yadwigha is said to be a Polish woman he knew when he was young.
In 1908, Picasso held a banquet in honor of Rousseau at his studio, the Bateau-Lavoir. Many people laughed at Rousseau's simple style, but young modern artists truly respected him.
Rousseau never went to art school. He taught himself to paint. He began painting seriously around the age of 40 and left his job at 49 to paint full-time. Even his nickname is not quite right: he collected city tolls, not customs.
