Story

Swiss painter Arnold Böcklin painted this first version of Isle of the Dead in 1880. A small rocky island rises from a dark sea. Tall black cypress trees stand in the middle. There are tomb-like doors cut into the rocks. A small boat comes toward the island. A figure in white stands in the boat beside a box covered with white cloth.

Böcklin never explained the meaning. He called it "a picture for dreaming." Many people think the rower is Charon, who carries the dead in Greek myth. A widow, Marie Berna, saw this painting and asked for a version in memory of her husband. The white figure and the coffin-like box were added for her, and Böcklin later added them to this first painting too.

The painting became very popular. Böcklin painted five versions between 1880 and 1886. An art dealer gave it the title Isle of the Dead in 1883. Prints hung in homes all over Europe. The composer Sergei Rachmaninoff wrote a symphonic poem inspired by it. This first version is in the Kunstmuseum Basel in Switzerland.
