この作品のお話
Story赤い夕焼けの山の上に、たくましい若者がひざをかかえてすわり、遠くを見つめています。彼は「デーモン（悪魔）」。でも、こわいというより、ひとりぼっちでさびしそうです。描いたのはロシアの画家ミハイル・ヴルーベリ。1890年の作品で、今はモスクワのトレチャコフ美術館にあります。
On a mountain under a red sunset, a strong young man sits hugging his knees and staring into the distance. He is a 'demon.' But he looks lonely and sad, not scary. The Russian painter Mikhail Vrubel made this picture in 1890. Today it is in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
もとになったのは、ロシアの詩人レールモントフの長い詩『悪魔』です。ヴルーベリはこのデーモンを「悪というより、苦しみ悲しむ精霊。けれど力強く、堂々とした精霊」と語りました。絵の具をパレットナイフで平らにのばし、角ばった面を重ねて、まるで水晶やステンドグラスのような画面を作っています。
It is based on 'The Demon,' a long poem by the Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov. Vrubel described his demon as 'a spirit, not so much evil as suffering and sorrowing, but in all that a powerful spirit, a majestic spirit.' He spread the paint flat with a palette knife and built up sharp-edged patches, so the picture looks like crystal or stained glass.
モスクワに移ったばかりのヴルーベリにとって、これは初めての大きな油絵でした。当時はきびしく批判されましたが、彼はその後もデーモンを描きつづけ、『飛ぶデーモン』『打ち倒されたデーモン』へと発展させます。今では、ロシア象徴主義を代表する一枚とされています。
It was Vrubel's first large oil painting after he moved to Moscow. Critics attacked it at the time, but he kept painting demons and later made 'The Demon Flying' and 'The Demon Downcast.' Today it is seen as one of the most important works of Russian Symbolism.

Secretsヴルーベリは、このデーモンを「悪というより、苦しみ悲しむ精霊」だと説明しました。ツノもしっぽもない、さびしげな若者の姿は、それまでの「こわい悪魔」のイメージを大きく変えるものでした。
Vrubel explained that this demon was 'not so much evil as suffering and sorrowing.' With no horns and no tail, this lonely young man changed the usual image of a scary devil.
デーモンの頭は画面の上のはしにぶつかり、足は下で切れています。まるで額の中に押しこめられ、身動きがとれないようです。この窮屈さが、とじこめられた心の苦しさを感じさせます。
The demon's head touches the top edge of the picture, and his feet are cut off at the bottom. He seems trapped inside the frame. This tight feeling suggests a spirit that is locked in and suffering.
ヴルーベリは、1891年に出版されたレールモントフ作品集のために、『悪魔』のさし絵も描きました。この絵と同じころ、彼はデーモンの世界にどっぷりとつかっていたのです。
Vrubel also made illustrations for 'The Demon' in an 1891 edition of Lermontov's works. Around the time of this painting, he was completely absorbed in the world of the demon.
のちの大作『打ち倒されたデーモン』では、ヴルーベリは展覧会に飾られたあとも、会場で何度も顔を描き直したと伝えられています。デーモンは、生涯彼の心をつかんではなさないテーマでした。
With his later work, 'The Demon Downcast,' Vrubel is said to have kept repainting the face even after it was hung in the exhibition. The demon was a subject that held him for the rest of his life.

On the far left, the sun is setting behind the mountains. The whole sky burns red.
