A crowd of pale faces comes toward us! A street scene called 'insane' by a newspaper.
In 1892 the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch painted Karl Johan Street, the main street of the capital Kristiania (now Oslo), in the evening. People in hats walk toward us with pale, mask-like faces and staring eyes. In the middle of the road, one dark figure walks the other way alone. The Parliament building and two poplar trees stand on the right.
This is one of the earliest works in Munch's 'Frieze of Life', a series about love, anxiety and death. Two years before, he had painted the same street in bright spring light. Here, loneliness and fear in the crowd come to the front. When it was shown in Kristiania in September 1892, a newspaper called it 'a downright insane painting', and people said both the picture and the painter were 'sick'.
In 1909, Rasmus Meyer, a businessman from Bergen in western Norway, bought the painting. His collection opened to the public in 1924, and today it is a treasure of KODE, the art museums of Bergen. The pale faces with staring eyes lead on to 'The Scream', which Munch painted the next year, in 1893.
It is evening on a big street. Many people walk toward us. Their faces are pale, and their eyes are wide open. Only one dark person walks the other way. A newspaper called this painting 'crazy'.
When it was shown in Kristiania in September 1892, the newspaper Morgenbladet called it 'a downright insane painting'. Visitors said the painting and the painter were 'sick'. But this strong reaction shows that Munch was trying to paint what goes on inside people's minds.
A dark figure walks alone down the middle of the road, away from the crowd. Many scholars see it as Munch himself. With just one shadowy figure, he may have shown how it feels to be alone in a crowd.
Munch also painted Karl Johan Street in 1890. That picture shows a bright spring day, painted with cheerful, dotted brushstrokes. In just two years, the same street became this eerie evening, showing how much Munch's art had changed.
Mask-like pale faces, staring eyes and a crowd pressing toward us: these features lead to 'The Scream' the next year. The theme of people struck by anxiety under an evening sky is also very similar. This painting was a sign of the world's most famous picture of fear to come.
