ノルウェーに生まれ、首都クリスチャニア（今のオスロ）で育ちました。幼いころに母と姉を病気で亡くし、不安や孤独、愛や死といった心の動きを絵のテーマにします。代表作《叫び》は、夕焼けの中で耳をふさぐ人物を描いた、世界でいちばん有名な絵の一つです。作品の多くはオスロ市に寄贈され、ムンク美術館にあります。
Munch was born in Norway and grew up in Kristiania, now Oslo. As a child, he lost his mother and older sister to illness. Feelings like fear, loneliness, love and death became the subjects of his art. His most famous work, The Scream, shows a figure holding its head under a red sunset. Most of his works were left to the city of Oslo and are in the Munch Museum.
