Story

Norwegian painter Edvard Munch made this, his most famous work, in 1893. Under a blood-red, swirling sunset, a figure with a skull-like face stands on a bridge above a fjord. The figure holds its face in its hands. Behind it, two people walk on as if nothing is wrong.

In his diary, Munch wrote about walking with two friends at sunset. The sky turned blood red, and he felt "an infinite scream passing through nature." Is the figure screaming, or covering its ears against the scream of nature? People read it in different ways. The place is said to be a road on Ekeberg hill in Oslo.

Munch made The Scream several times: two paintings, two pastels and a print. This 1893 work is the first painted version. It is in the National Museum of Norway in Oslo. It shows anxiety directly through shape and color, and it is seen as a starting point of Expressionism. Today, it inspires films, comics and even an emoji.
