Story

Edvard Munch, famous for The Scream, painted this huge picture in 1910–1911. The sun rises from the sea beyond a bay, and rays of light burst across the whole canvas. The light reaches the rocks and green fields in front, painting the world in bands of color. The view is based on Kragerø, a seaside town in southern Norway.

In 1908, Munch had a breakdown and was treated at a clinic in Denmark. Then he returned to Norway. He entered a competition to decorate the new hall (Aula) of the University of Oslo, and The Sun was at the center of his plan. Munch had often painted fear and death, but here he painted life and light.

After much debate, the murals were finished and installed in the Aula in 1916. The painting in this image is another large version, now at the Munch Museum in Oslo. When Munch died, he left all the works he still owned to the city of Oslo. That huge collection became the base of the Munch Museum.

This is a sunrise. The sun is very bright, and light goes everywhere. Munch also painted The Scream. But this picture is full of hope! It is very big, more than seven meters wide.
