この作品のお話
Storyクリムトが、ベルギーのブリュッセルに建てられた大邸宅「ストックレー邸」の食堂の壁をかざるために描いた、原寸大の下絵（カルトン）の1枚です。くるくる巻いたうずまきの枝が画面いっぱいに広がり、枝には目のもようや三角形、黒い鳥がとまっています。根もとには、色とりどりの花が咲いています。
This is one of Klimt's full-size cartoons, or design drawings, for the dining room of the Stoclet House in Brussels, Belgium. Spiral branches spread across the whole sheet. Eye shapes, triangles and a black bird sit on the branches. Colorful flowers bloom at the bottom.
ストックレー邸は、ベルギーの大富豪アドルフ・ストックレーのために、ウィーンの建築家ヨーゼフ・ホフマンが設計した家です。クリムトは食堂の長い壁に「生命の樹」を中心とした帯状の壁画（フリーズ）をデザインしました。実際の壁画は、職人たちが大理石・モザイク・エナメル・金・半貴石などを使って作りあげました。この下絵は、そのための9枚組の設計図の1枚です。
The Stoclet House was built for the rich Belgian businessman Adolphe Stoclet. It was designed by the Viennese architect Josef Hoffmann. Klimt designed a long frieze with the Tree of Life at its center for the dining room walls. Craftsmen made the real frieze with marble, mosaic, enamel, gold and semi-precious stones. This drawing is one of the nine cartoons used as plans.
枝にあるタカ（ホルスのハヤブサ）や「ホルスの目」のような形は、エジプト美術を思わせます。ストックレー夫妻がエジプトや古代、ビザンティンの美術を集めていたことと関係があると考えられています。9枚の下絵は、今はウィーンのMAK（応用美術館）にあり、修復を経て常設展示されています。
The bird on the branch, a Horus falcon, and the eye shapes like the Eye of Horus recall Egyptian art. This may be linked to the Stoclets' collection of Egyptian, ancient and Byzantine art. The nine cartoons are now at the MAK (Museum of Applied Arts) in Vienna. After restoration, they are on permanent display.

This is a tree with spiral branches. Klimt made this picture as a plan. Workers used it to make a wall in a big house. You can see his notes to the workers! A black bird sits in the tree.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secretsよく見ると、下絵のあちこちに鉛筆の文字が書きこまれています。クリムトが「ここはどんな材料で作るか」を職人に伝えた手書きの指示で、エナメルや真珠層など最高の素材を使うよう求めていたそうです。
Look closely and you can find pencil writing here and there. These are Klimt's handwritten instructions for the craftsmen. He asked them to use only the finest materials, such as enamel and mother-of-pearl.
ストックレー邸は2009年にユネスコ世界遺産になりましたが、今も個人の家で、ふだんは中に入れません。だからこの下絵が、クリムトのデザインを間近で見られる貴重なチャンスなのです。
The Stoclet House became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. But it is still a private home, and visitors usually cannot go inside. So these cartoons are a rare chance to see Klimt's design up close.
食堂では、向かい合う2つの壁に同じ「生命の樹」が鏡うつしに配置されました。片方には踊る女性「期待」、もう片方には抱き合う男女「成就」が組み合わされています。9枚の下絵には、ほかに「騎士」とよばれる模様のパネルもあります。
In the dining room, the same Tree of Life appears on two facing walls, like mirror images. One side has a dancing woman called Expectation. The other has a couple called Fulfillment. Another of the nine cartoons is a patterned panel called the Knight.
フリーズの「成就」に描かれた抱き合う男女は、男性の服が四角、女性の服が丸のもようで、名作「接吻」とよく似ています。クリムトの黄金時代の終わりをかざる仕事でした。
The embracing couple in Fulfillment looks a lot like The Kiss: squares on the man's robe and circles on the woman's. This project came at the end of Klimt's Golden Phase.

Blue eye shapes sit on many branches. They recall the Egyptian Eye of Horus.
3かざりの幹Decorated trunk
幹には三角や丸、目玉のようなかざりがびっしり。宝石をちりばめたようです。
The trunk is covered with triangles, circles and eye shapes, like jewels.
4鉛筆の書きこみPencil notes
うすい鉛筆の文字は、職人への指示。下絵ならではの見どころです。
The faint pencil writing gives instructions to the craftsmen. You only see this on a cartoon.
