Story

This is Klimt's Death and Life. On the left, Death stands as a skeleton in a robe covered with crosses. He holds a club and stares to the right. On the right, people of all ages, from a baby and a mother to young lovers and an old woman, huddle together in flowery cloth. Most of them have their eyes closed.

Klimt began planning it around 1908. When it was shown in Rome in 1911, it won a gold medal. But around 1915, for unknown reasons, Klimt reworked it. He changed the gold background to gray and added more patterns. It shows how he moved from the golden style of The Kiss to a new, colorful style.

The painting traveled to exhibitions in Dresden, Budapest, Prague, Berlin, Stockholm and other cities. Klimt died in 1918. Today it is in the Leopold Museum in Vienna. It is famous for showing life and death through the contrast of bright and dark colors.
