Introduction

Paintings that sparkle with real gold leaf. In Vienna around 1900, Gustav Klimt created rich, mysterious pictures that no one had seen before. His father was a gold engraver, and Klimt trained at a school of applied arts. His work crossed the line between painting and decoration.

Klimt said goodbye to the old art world, founded the Vienna Secession with his friends and followed his own path despite criticism. We will see his Golden Period, inspired by gold mosaics in Italy, his ideas from Japanese art, great paintings lost in a fire during the war, and a portrait taken by the Nazis that went home after nearly 70 years. Welcome to the golden world!

Highlights
1

Gold from his father and from Ravenna

Klimt's father was a gold engraver, so working with gold was familiar from childhood. In 1903, the gold mosaics he saw in Ravenna, Italy, are said to have sparked his Golden Period.

2

To every age its art'

Above the entrance of the Secession building are the words 'To every age its art, to art its freedom.' People in Vienna nicknamed its dome of golden leaves 'the golden cabbage.'

3

Lost masterpieces

Klimt painted Philosophy, Medicine and Jurisprudence for the ceiling of the University of Vienna, but they were harshly criticized as too daring. All three burned in a castle fire at the end of World War II. Today we know them only from photographs.

4

Inspired by Japanese art

Klimt was very interested in Japanese prints, kimono and crafts. His gold backgrounds, like folding screens, and his flat patterns are thought to show the influence of Japanese art.

Home after nearly 70 years

Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I was taken by the Nazis and later kept in a museum in Vienna. Adele's niece, Maria Altmann, went to court, and in 2006 it was returned to the family. The story was even made into a film.
