1903年、クリムトが描いた森の風景です。正方形の画面に、白い樺の幹がまっすぐ何本も立ちならび、地面はオレンジや茶色の落ち葉でびっしりおおわれています。空は描かれず、木の上も下も画面の端で切られているため、まるで森の中に立っているような気分になります。人も動物もいない、静かな秋の森です。

Klimt painted this forest in 1903. On a square canvas, many white birch trunks stand straight up, and the ground is covered with orange and brown fallen leaves. There is no sky, and the trees are cut off at the top and bottom of the picture. You feel as if you are standing inside the forest. It is a quiet autumn wood with no people or animals.

クリムトは金色の人物画で有名ですが、夏の休暇には湖のほとりで風景画を描きました。円熟期の風景画には、正方形のキャンバスに描いたものがたくさんあります。のぞき道具や望遠鏡のようなもので景色を切り取って構図を決めたともいわれます。細かい点を重ねたような筆づかいは、モザイクや点描を思わせます。

Klimt is famous for his golden portraits, but during his summer holidays by a lake, he painted landscapes. Many of his mature landscapes are on square canvases. It is said that he used a viewfinder or a kind of telescope to frame the view. His tiny, dot-like brushstrokes remind us of mosaics and pointillism.

この絵はウィーンの実業家フェルディナント・ブロッホ＝バウアーが持っていましたが、1938年にナチス・ドイツに奪われ、戦後はオーストリアの美術館に置かれました。2006年、長い法的な争いのすえに一族へ返され、同じ年の競売で約4030万ドルで落札されました。買ったのはマイクロソフトの共同創業者ポール・アレンです。

This painting belonged to Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, a businessman in Vienna. In 1938 it was taken by Nazi Germany, and after the war it stayed in an Austrian museum. In 2006, after a long legal fight, it was returned to his family. That same year, it sold at auction for about 40.3 million dollars. The buyer was Paul Allen, a co-founder of Microsoft.
