ウィーン近郊に生まれました。父は金の彫刻師でした。若いころは劇場の天井画などで成功しますが、1897年に古い美術界から離れて「ウィーン分離派」をつくり、初代会長になります。金箔をふんだんに使った「黄金の時代」の《接吻》や《アデーレ・ブロッホ＝バウアーの肖像 I》は、ウィーンを代表する名画です。
Klimt was born near Vienna. His father was a gold engraver. As a young man, he was successful painting theater ceilings. But in 1897 he broke away from the old art world and founded the Vienna Secession, becoming its first president. His 'Golden Period' works, like The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, use lots of gold leaf. They are symbols of Vienna today.
