The woman in the swirling blue dress was Klimt's lifelong partner.
Klimt painted this almost life-size portrait in 1902. In a tall, narrow picture, a woman stands with her hand on her hip. She wears a dress covered with blue and green swirls and golden patterns. The model is Emilie Flöge. She was the sister of Klimt's brother's wife, and she was Klimt's close partner all his life. The painting is now in the Wien Museum.
In 1904, Emilie and her sisters opened a fashion salon in Vienna called 'Schwestern Flöge' (the Flöge Sisters). They made clothes for wealthy women, including loose 'reform dresses' that did not squeeze the body. In this painting, her face and hands look real, but the dress is a flat pattern. This mix of painting and decoration is typical of Klimt.
Klimt showed the painting at the 'Kunstschau Wien' exhibition in 1908, and the state of Lower Austria bought it. Later it moved to the collection of the city of Vienna. Klimt and Emilie never married. But they spent many summers together at Lake Attersee and remained close throughout Klimt's life.
This is Emilie. She wears a long blue dress. The dress has many small patterns. Emilie made clothes for her own shop. She and Klimt were close for many years.

In 1918, Klimt suffered a stroke. It is said that he asked for Emilie to be called to him. Emilie continued her fashion work for many years and carefully kept Klimt's letters and works.
Klimt sent Emilie hundreds of postcards and letters, even from inside Vienna. They talk about small things like the weather, his health and plans to meet. They show that the two kept in touch almost every day.
At the lower right, a square reads 'GVSTAV KLIMT' and '19 02', and a second square below it holds his monogram. Klimt collected Japanese and East Asian art and knew seal designs well. This seal-like signature is said to show that influence.
In photos from summers at Lake Attersee, Emilie wears long, loose dresses, and Klimt wears his long painter's smock. Fashion that did not squeeze the body was a very new style in Vienna at that time.
