Story

Austrian painter Gustav Klimt painted this large square picture in 1908 and finished it in 1909. In a shining gold space, a couple embraces at the edge of a flowery meadow. The man holds the woman's face in his hands. She kneels with her eyes closed. A huge golden robe wraps around them both.

This period is called Klimt's "Golden Phase." Klimt was already using gold around 1900, but the shining gold Byzantine mosaics he saw in Ravenna, Italy, in 1903 moved him deeply. He used real gold leaf. He gave the man's robe black and white rectangles, and the woman's dress colorful circles and flowers. The patterns show how the two are different.

In 1908, it was shown at an exhibition in Vienna and caused a sensation. The Austrian government bought it while the show was still on. The price was 25,000 crowns, a huge amount at the time. It has belonged to the Belvedere in Vienna ever since. Today you can find it on posters, mugs and umbrellas all over the world.

Two people hold each other in a golden world. The painting has real gold in it! Klimt's father worked with gold. Look at the clothes. The man has squares, and the woman has circles.
