この作品のお話
Story『接吻』で知られるウィーンの画家クリムトが、1906年に描いた風景画です（1907年ごろとする資料もあります）。正方形のキャンバスいっぱいに、背の高いひまわり、赤や白や青の花、緑の葉がぎっしり。空も地平線も描かれず、花そのものが模様のように画面をうめつくしています。今はウィーンのベルヴェデーレ宮にあります。
Gustav Klimt, the Viennese painter famous for 'The Kiss', painted this landscape in 1906 (some sources say around 1907). Tall sunflowers, red, white and blue flowers and green leaves fill the square canvas. There is no sky or horizon. The flowers themselves cover the picture like a pattern. The painting is now in the Belvedere in Vienna.
クリムトは1900年から1916年まで、夏になるとオーストリアのアッター湖のほとりで過ごし（1913年だけは短い滞在）、そこで風景画を描きました。この農家の花畑も、湖畔の夏に見つけたものです。景色を選ぶときは、厚紙に四角い穴をあけた手作りの「ファインダー」をのぞき、いちばんよい部分を切り取りました。そのため奥行きが消え、平らで装飾的な画面になっています。
From 1900 to 1916, Klimt spent his summers by Lake Attersee in Austria (in 1913 he made only a short visit) and painted landscapes there. He found this farm garden during one of those summers. To choose a view, he looked through a homemade 'viewfinder', a piece of cardboard with a square hole, and picked the best part. This removes the sense of depth and makes the picture flat and decorative.
この絵が描かれたのは、金色の『接吻』と同じころ。人物画では金をたくさん使ったクリムトですが、風景画では色とりどりの細かい筆づかいで、宝石をちりばめたような輝きを生みました。クリムトの風景画はほとんどが正方形で、近年はオークションで高値がつくことでも注目されています。
It was painted around the same time as the golden 'The Kiss'. Klimt used a lot of gold in his figure paintings, but in landscapes he used many small, colorful brushstrokes that sparkle like jewels. Almost all of Klimt's landscapes are square, and in recent years they have attracted attention for their high prices at auction.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secretsクリムトは厚紙に四角い穴をあけた道具を自分で作り、それをのぞいて景色のいちばんよい部分を探しました。カメラのファインダーのような使い方です。遠くのものを大きく見るために、望遠鏡やオペラグラスも使ったといわれます。
Klimt made a tool from cardboard with a square hole and looked through it to find the best part of a view, like a camera viewfinder. He is also said to have used a telescope or opera glasses to see faraway things up close.
クリムトの風景画は、ほとんどが正方形のキャンバスに描かれています。ふつう風景画は横長が多いので、とても珍しいことです。正方形だと画面に「上下左右」の向きの強さがなくなり、落ち着いた、模様のような印象になります。
Almost all of Klimt's landscapes are painted on square canvases. This is very unusual, because most landscapes are wide. A square has no strong direction, so the picture feels calm and pattern-like.
作家ヘルマン・バールによると、ドイツの画家リーバーマンはウィーンの絵を「描かれたじゅうたん」とたとえたそうです。批評的なたとえですが、すき間なく花をしきつめたこの絵を見ると、なるほど豪華なじゅうたんのようにも見えてきます。
According to the writer Hermann Bahr, the German painter Max Liebermann compared Viennese painting to 'painted carpets'. It was a critical comparison, but when you look at this picture covered edge to edge with flowers, it does look like a rich carpet.
同じころ（1907年ごろ）に描かれた花畑の絵『農家の庭』は、2017年にロンドンのオークションで約4800万ポンド（手数料こみ）で落札されました。当時、クリムトの風景画として最高の値段です。ベルヴェデーレ宮のこの絵は、その「兄弟」にあたる作品です。
'Farm Garden', another flower garden painted around the same time (c. 1907), sold at auction in London in 2017 for about £48 million, including fees. At that time, it was the highest price ever for a Klimt landscape. This painting in the Belvedere is like its brother.
