Storyデンマークの画家ハンマースホイが1903〜1904年ごろに描いた室内画です。灰色の壁の部屋で、黒い服の女性がこちらに背を向けて立ち、背中のうしろで銀色のお盆のようなものを持っています。左の茶色い家具の上には、青い絵つけのある白いふたつきの器。壁には額がかかっています。
Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi made this interior around 1903–1904. In a room with gray walls, a woman in black stands with her back to us. She holds a silver tray or platter behind her. On the brown furniture at the left, there is a white tureen with blue decoration. A picture frame hangs on the wall.
モデルは妻のイーダ、部屋はコペンハーゲンのストランゲーデ通りにあった自分たちのアパートです。ハンマースホイはこの部屋を何度もくり返し描き、色を灰色・白・黒・茶にしぼって、音のない静けさを表しました。むだのない部屋の様子は、今では「北欧デザイン」の先がけとも見られています。
The model is his wife, Ida, and the room is in their own apartment on Strandgade in Copenhagen. Hammershøi painted these rooms again and again. He used only a few colors, like gray, white, black and brown, to show a silent calm. The simple rooms are now seen as an early example of Scandinavian design.
生前はヨーロッパで評価されていましたが、亡くなったあと長く忘れられ、20世紀の終わりから再び注目されるようになりました。日本でも2008年と2020年に大きな展覧会が開かれ、人気を集めました。この絵はデンマークのランダース美術館にあります。
He was respected in Europe during his life, but after his death he was forgotten for a long time. Interest returned in the late 20th century. In Japan, big exhibitions were held in 2008 and 2020 and drew many visitors. This painting is in the Randers Kunstmuseum in Denmark.

Secretsハンマースホイは妻イーダを何度も描きましたが、その多くは背中を向けた姿です。表情が見えないぶん、見る人は「何を考えているのだろう」と想像をふくらませることになります。
Hammershøi painted his wife Ida many times, but often from behind. Because we cannot see her face, we start to wonder what she is thinking.
デンマークの美術史家ノーレゴー＝ニールセンは、女性がもつお盆が体のかたむきとつり合いをとり、見る人の目をうなじへ引きよせている、と指摘しています。フェルメールなど17世紀オランダの室内画に学んだとも言われます。
Danish art historian Hans Edvard Nørregård-Nielsen pointed out that the tray balances her leaning body and draws our eyes to the back of her neck. He is said to have learned from 17th-century Dutch interiors, such as Vermeer's.
ドイツ語の詩人リルケはハンマースホイの絵に強くひかれ、1900年代のはじめにコペンハーゲンをたずねて本人に会っています。彼について本を書くことも考えていましたが、実現しませんでした。
The poet Rainer Maria Rilke was strongly drawn to Hammershøi's paintings. In the early 1900s, he traveled to Copenhagen and met him. He even thought about writing a book on him, but never did.
日本では「ハンマースホイ」とも、デンマーク語の発音に近い「ハマスホイ」とも書かれます。2008年の展覧会は前者、2020年の展覧会は後者の表記でした。原語の「ø」は、デンマーク語などで使われる文字です。
In Japan, his name is written as both "Hanmāsuhoi" and "Hamasuhoi," which is closer to the Danish sound. The 2008 and 2020 Japanese exhibitions used different spellings. The letter ø is used in Danish and Norwegian.
