デンマークのコペンハーゲンに生まれました。自分が住むアパートの部屋を、灰色や白のおさえた色で何度も描きます。人がいない部屋、窓から差すうすい光、うしろ姿の女性（妻イーダ）などが登場し、時間が止まったような静かな絵が特徴です。亡くなったあと長く忘れられましたが、20世紀の終わりごろから再び注目されています。
Hammershøi was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He painted the rooms of his own apartment again and again, in soft greys and whites. Empty rooms, pale light from windows and a woman seen from behind, his wife Ida, appear in his work. His pictures are so quiet that time seems to stop. He was forgotten for many years after his death, but people began to rediscover him in the late 20th century.
